“Listen,” Sheriff Engel said firmly, “I know this sounds crazy, but that’s how it is.”

He sighed, sat back down in his chair, and poured a cup of coffee for you and himself.

“A lady in the residential area saw a strange man wearing this mask and holding a blood-stained butcher’s knife,” he said, gesturing to the black leather mask on the table. The mask had a comical long nose and a strange yellow symbol scrawled on its forehead.

"So she called the police. My buddies and I caught the guy at the intersection of Thorntonsteller Street and Garrison Street." The sheriff recounted the events with clenched teeth and a furrowed brow.

"When we handcuffed the young man, he kept laughing. He called himself a clown and kept saying 'The carnival is about to begin,' God knows what he meant. It wasn't until the next day when we found the victim's body that we connected it to what he said. The defense demanded he wear a straitjacket. We gladly complied."
